What is GMRS?
GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) is a licensed radio service for personal or family communication. It's great for local communication during events, travel, or emergencies — and it doesn't require a test.
How to Get a GMRS License
- Visit the FCC’s Universal Licensing System.
- Create an FCC account (if you don’t already have one).
- Apply for a GMRS license (FCC license code: ZA).
- Pay the current fee (about $35 for 10 years).
Once approved, your license will cover you and your immediate family members for legal use of GMRS radios.
Suggested Radios
There are a wide range of GMRS-capable radios available. Here are some popular options used by members of our local group:
- Handheld: BTECH GMRS-V2, Wouxun KG-935G
- Mobile: BTECH GMRS-50V2, Wouxun KG-1000G
Keep in mind that GMRS radios must be certified under FCC Part 95E to be legally used on GMRS frequencies. When in doubt, check the product description or manufacturer’s website.
Radio Etiquette
- Always identify with your GMRS call sign.
- Keep transmissions short, clear, and courteous.
- Listen before transmitting — avoid “kerchunking” (keying up without speaking).
- Follow any repeater-specific rules or tone requirements.
- Be respectful to other users and give space for emergency or priority traffic.
